The industry would not be where it is today without the work of the esteemed RuPaul Andre Charles. His competition-style drag queen reality TV shows inspired the Charlotte drag queen scene to produce their own brands, styles, and performances, for public and private parties. Nearly 10-years after RuPaul changed drag queen shows forever, the LGBTQ+ community is stronger than ever. In a 2019 Guardian article, drag historian Joe E. Jeffreys traces the origins of the “drag-and-dine” phenomenon to the 1950s, when restaurants had to compete for the business of an exploding middle class.
I am absolutely honored to organize this event for the community. Across the restaurant, Doris “Dodie” Reavis celebrates her birthday with two generations of women in her family, plus a few friends. Her daughter, Kelly Reavis, has come to a drag show here before, but this is Dodie’s first time.

Bar Argon is one of the most popular and beloved LGBTQ+ bars in Charlotte and is well known for its weekly drag shows.
